Landscape Plan

Hello,

Attached is a working draft of the landscape plan.  I should have the lighting plan and irrigation plan uploaded hopefully by tomorrow.

Tim - Does the survey show the point of connection for the water main?  I'm having trouble determining where it is.

  • Great points Tim thanks. Actually we were hoping to attract the deer to come to our house! ;)

Hopefully they wouldn't tear it up too much but we would love it if they came by alot.

We do want a vegetable garden so we should plan on the critter control.

  • I didn't check to see if this was already taken account of but if Roses are going to be added - they are "deer candy" (the deer love them).   Do we have deer fencing or are we trying to go the route of specifying plants that deer won't want to eat as much?  I also didn't see if there was going to be a vegetable garden but typically those need to have a complete critter enclosure (including under the soil for gophers or "digging" critters) in this area.

  • Hi Robert, we would like to have the courtyard at same/similar elevation as the gallery.  Also , Christine says thank you for remembering the roses!  Any variety will do, red is a must, should we keep all red???  Also, love the use of boulders.  How about a path or stairway going from the deck to the backyard landing to complete the flow around the house?  Not sure how much you are able to do right now since we need to hear from Jim but we can keep that in mind.

Also one thing I was thinking about which we can do when we hear back from Jim and discuss with him is placement of the propane tank.  Thanks--Jeff

  • I can see why a landing would be needed.

Jeff would you like to be at a similar elevation as the gallery as you enter the courtyard or walk down into the court yard.  I can draw either.

  • Looking good Robert.   We do still need to hear back from Jim (Civil) on the driveway still (per Jeff's e-mail as well).  Also we can't have the stairs right in-front of the gallery door to the rear courtyard (there needs to be at least a landing or the entire courtyard at that height and it transitions outside the perimeter of the courtyard as needed.  + Yes my cover sheet will have a Vicinity Map.

  • Here's a progress set from this weekend.  There are still some notes I want to get onto some of the sheets and some dimensioning on possibly another page for a layout plan.  Not sure how crucial that is for this step.

Planting - There's plenty of fruiting trees that respond well to espalier training, so we do not need to be set on the fig.

Christine are there any particular rose varieties you would like to add to the planting list?

The only thing about raising the turf area and pool is that it will create a steeper slope/ walls on the eastside.  The only solution is stepping down more into the courtyard or use that space as a more transitional space to get down to grade.  We can certainly try raising the other end (turf/ pool), but as of now the turf is already 3.25' above the natural grade.

Has there been any progress on the driveway?

Tim will your Cover Sheet have the context/ vicinity map?  I can add it to mine if need be.

  • Hi Robert, Christine and I looked over the plans in details and we think they look great!  looking forward to seeing the cover page finish etc.  The picture of the fig tree as a espalier was very helpful and we agree that it will look really nice growing up against the stucco and feels very mediterranean! Also, its nice because it keeps the outdoor spaces "open" since it grows up against the house.  Perhaps we could look at other fruit options but we like the use of the tree as an espalier.

One thing we had talked about last week on the phone is that you mentioned the amount of fill created will be alot, I was thinking since we probably dont want to touch the FFE's (i.e. town's feelings on that) how about we try and raise the pool with patio and grass area?  That way we could try and lower the 7 foot difference from house to pool?  Just a thought.

Great job Robert, rock on! --jeff and Christine

  • Drafts for the hardscape/ drainage plan and planting plan.

As for the specifics to the plant material.

Rockrose - there's a lot of varieties.  It should be easy to find a variety to your guys' liking.

The London Plane Tree - I intended it to be a focal point tree just south of the study patio. I feel that it would create a strong visual anchor.  The leaves will yes drop. Leaf drop is beneficial to the soil.  It does not have to be the London Plan Tree, but I feel a nice large deciduous tree with a lot of structure would balance the cherry tree grove.

Fig Tree - The fig trees would be trained as an espalier. The placement of the figs would be along the walls in the outdoor kitchen area.  An espalier breaks up large masses of walls well to add some dynamics to it.  An espalier works really well with stucco backdrops.  here are many other fruit species one could substitute if you wish to pursue the espalier as an element within your landscape.

In the upcoming week I hope to have the cover page finish, polish the other pages and get some spot elevations in the hardscape plan.

    Cheers!

  • Hi Robert, Christine and I reviewed the planting schedule (looked up each plant) and we really like the plants/trees you have picked.  Looks like a great blends of colors and a good variety but still manageable to take care of.  The Akebono Cherry tree was a great surprise to see!  We love cherry trees!  For the Sage Leaf Rockrose, looks like it comes in different colors, could we get the yellow flower with maroon in it?  Do you think the London Plane Tree and Black Mission Fig might be too messy?  Drop too much?

Thanks again Robert, you have really captured the mediterranean feel for the residence!

  • Hi Robert, just reviewed with Christine, great plans, we like them alot.  We think the lighting plan is very nice and will be just the right amount of light for us.  One thing we would like though is to revert back to the larger grass area next to the pool that you had previously.  I know there may be an issue with the two trees there due to the scenic easement but we could put in skinnier type trees or could put the trees in the easement area (maybe do trees with hefty breadth but that stay close to 10 feet in height? (i.e. dont grow too tall?)  Also, how about we do two uplights for these two trees?

Thanks again, looking forward to seeing the plants you are compiling.  --Jeff and Christine
