Initial Interior design comments

Hi All,

This is my first comment so I hope it makes it to everyone!

I had some thoughts on the upstairs and emailed Jeff, he suggested I start a discussion to get everyone's input!

Abby's bath and bedroom- the bath shares a wall with the master bed wall, is there a way to rework this room and bath to minimize the noise from the bath to the master bedroom and master bedroom back into Abby's bath? I noticed this wall is thicker than most, will a thicker wall and sound proofing be enough?! With all the hard surfaces in Abby's bath noises will echo.

Also, if Abby's bath stays in the same location I would suggest mirroring the current layout so the tub/shower is on the exterior window wall and the vanity and toilet are on the interior bath wall. Having a window where the vanity mirror is to go seems a bit out of place? It would be nice to have a window in the shower for ventilation!

I noticed Abby's closet is the smallest out of all 4 and she doesn't have space for a dresser! Is there a way to gain storage space for her?

Note: the closet in the master foyer is not to be used as Abby's space, it will stay as master storage.

Please share all comments and ideas! Thanks so much, Stephanie Yeraka

  • Hi Stephanie - per your quoted comments - I've added a reply

Yes this will be a sound wall.  We can do a 2x4 stagger stud wall with 2x6 plates - with insulation and 2 layers of Sheetrock on one side.  You are correct though as well to limit hard surfaces in the bath if possible.

It is better if the toilet is on an exterior wall for the waste pipe.  I also try to avoid a window in the shower since it creates mildew and often water problems over time.  The window will be a small one above mirror height for the sink

See Jeff's great find for a built in.  I would also suggest making storage use of the window seat iself

Great example of great design dialogue and how social media works for projects like this :)

  • Thank you Stephanie, great points!  The window in the bathroom is high up so I think a vanity would still work there although I like your point about having the window there to air out the shower/steam etc.

Perhaps we could work with the window seat placement to gain some linear wall space for a dresser?  I can measure her dresser tonight to get a rough idea on how long the dresser is.  It would be nice to get a little more closet space but probably not essential but lets see what options we might have.

Also, we toured some toll brothers home for fun and saw this cool built in storage, looks like we can do something similar in our entrance off the garages, probably just move a wall over a little, and I think Tim, in your earlier drawings you actually may have had something like this in there.

Would the cabinet vendor also do a built in like this?

    Thanks! --jeff
