Ideas for Tiny House

Copied from Teddi's e-mail today...

Here are some thoughts.
1. I hate to be too close to heating and cooling units. Don’t like them blowing on me as
it kills my sinus.
2. My thought was standard or queen Murphy bed. The side units would be bookcase or
cubby holes for arty stuff. Once the bed is down could there be holes cut on inside so
could use as coffee table. Just room for coffee in bed and maybe a phone????
3. Thinking of a floor to ceiling (or close) window on one wall and so it could open a
little for air flow. I usually sleep with window open, even if it is snowing.
4. Over sink in kitchen good size mirror as it will also be bathroom area. I did the
kitchen ideas not having a clue if the size would work, but thought a small overhang
could accommodate a couple bar stools for using IPad or having coffee. Window offset
from mirror for light and view.
5. John wants French doors that open out. I wasn’t sure of size but think used 8’ Might
be too big.
6. Pocket door to bathroom. Not sure about indoor shower or how big bathroom has to
be. You can figure that out. Wasn’t sure if potty would be appropriate on side of unit
with outdoor Murphy bed.
7. Don’t need closet but someplace to put suitcases (2 probably) and a couple hooks for
hanging clothes. Can be open.
8. We would like to figure on rooftop deck and the bridge as you discussed. Would need
some sort of stairs from deck to roof top (in case you forgot the wine, LOL)
Here is what I figure we would need in kitchen so space can be figured out:
Keurig coffee maker on sink (probably nothing else, appliance wise)
Kitchen should have: silverware drawer and could accommodate tools also
Tools: hand can opener, cups, glasses, small plates, wine glasses, cutting board, knives,
corkscrew, champagne cap, small basket for crackers, scissors, tongs,
Storage: Salt, pepper, coffee, sugar, stevia,
Storage for a toaster oven type unit
Storage for: soaps (bath and kitchen), dish clothes, bath towel sets

Under the Murphy bed I envision a foldable couch, like futon with storage underneath.
Might need to be custom made. Also coffee table that the Murphy bed can fold over
when down so you don’t need to move it out of the way. There might be one other chair
that can be moved out of the way???? Pillows????
These are just thought. My drawing is probably way out of scale, but that is how I
envision setup.
Your ideas are much appreciated.
BTW…no TV, just IPads

  • I’m still on road. We will probably opt out of TV. Kids don’t use them anyway. Internet important. I’ll be able to work on this more when I get home 2/12
  • I posted the schematic design with reply to your comments as posted above on the 30th

    1. Done - think this is a good location
    2. Done - and I put a small TV in the pantry cabinet (let me know if you want it there or not)
    3. I wouldn't do it floor to ceiling since it would cost more and weaken the structure (think floor to 8ft should work fine)
    4. Done - see plan
    5. We can do french doors but as they swing out they will interfere with the deck space and would be hard to screen.  I know you talked about vinyl (but I think it will melt potentially when the container gets hot with summer sun) - so I would suggest an aluminum door / windows - but we can still get them in white if that's the color you want - let me know.   Another problem with out-swing doors is a criminal can remove the hinges and the door easily.   The Double - Out-swing french door does have a potential big advantage though - it opens up the entire space more but are usually on 6ft wide - where what I show is a 8ft slider. (let me know what you think)?
    6. I did a barn door instead of a pocket door and agree that the toilet inside is better - and we can do a wrap around deck to the shower (the out-door shower isn't designed yet - didn't know if you wanted it as a separate deck or tied into the main one with the Murphy bed)
    7. There are various storage / linen / pantry / closet options that I squeezed in - even lifting the combo washer / dryer unit off the floor you can get storage above and below.
    8. I imagined the container sitting lengthwise parallel to the contours (running East to West) so I show the stairs and planters (which will be similar to one of the videos' I sent you) on the uphill side so it can function more like a bridge with a "few steps" - don't know how many quite yet since it will depend on the slope.   You'll get awesome views from the roof deck (and I imagine you even having potted plants not only in the planters going alongside of the stair / bridge - but on the roof-top as well = not the entire roof but just a few).   We could also do a spiral stair to the right of the slider (let me know) - but it may not be needed since we could tie the decks around each side - from the south to the west to the north side (right now I only show a deck on the south side).
    9. Kitchen - we can work out specific storage locations but much of it can go in the pantry
    10. I agree with you both on the indoor and outdoor Murphy beds and we'll have to do more research on these.   You don't need to move a coffee table with a Murphy bed - it can actually rest right on top of the coffee table and give it more support.
